Description

FIRST EDITION, folio, pp. [ii], iii, [i], ff. [60] + 60 hand-coloured engraved plates. Hand-coloured vignette to title-page. Slightly later half red roan, marbled boards, flat spine elaborately gilt in compartments, black morocco label, marbled endpapers. A little spotting, some faint offsetting from plates, plate 39 plate with an old repair to a horizontal tear that touches the background of the image (no loss). Extremities rubbed and a touch worn, front hinge and rear joint cracking.

Notes

Pyne's important collection of depictions of British roles and customs, evidently issued over an extended period of time in multiple versions. The earliest have the title-page dated 1804 and watermarks of 1805 and earlier, and there was a second issue with the title-page dated 1808, with some versions having only the figures coloured and others the backgrounds as well. But copies with the earlier title-page also exist with later watermarks, as here: the title-page is dated 1804, but the text leaves have watermarks of 1821 and the plate leaves 1823; the plates are in the more desirable fully coloured state, sometimes associated with earlier issues (e.g. by Abbey).
