Description

2 vols., 8vo, pp. [ii], xxxi, [i], 282, 6 (ads), [vi], [283]-639, [3, ads]. Largely untrimmed in original blue paper boards. Some toning and spotting. Somewhat crudely rebacked with pale cloth, spines lettered in black, boards marked and corners worn, cloth splitting at one joint.

Notes

The fourth edition of Lindsay's history, the last before the Scottish Text Society's modern scholarly edition in the early 20th century, but the first to seriously consider the variations in the manuscript tradition - the editor was the antiquary Sir John Graham Dalyell - which includes over 15 surviving examples from a wide range of dates. The text continues Bellenden's Scots adaptation of Boece from 1437 until the 1570s, with a uniquely personal perspective since the Lindsay family were involved in much of this history.
