Notes

The first publication of these stories by Zealia Bishop (1897-1968) in book form, having appeared initially in the magazine 'Weird Tales' in 1929, 1939, and 1940. Bishop also wrote two short biographical pieces for this volume, one on her mentor and collaborator H.P. Lovecraft, and one on August Derleth. Bishop had first sought Lovecraft's services as an editor in 1928 with the story that became 'The Curse of Yig', and paid him $17.50 for his work. In letters, Lovecraft often later claimed that all three stories were mostly his own work, but 'Medusa's Coil' and 'The Mound' were not accepted by Weird Tales in his versions, instead later printed under Bishop's name with edits by Derleth and others.
