Later green roan, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands, compartments bordered with gilt rules, 2nd and 3rd compartments lettered direct in gilt, top edge gilt. A touch of spotting. Just a little rubbed, spine lightly sunned. Bookseller’s label of Charles Hutt, London, to pastedown.

A reprint of Smollett's 1771 novel, the first volume of Thomas Roscoe's series 'The Novelist's Library' series, with series half-title and a capsule biography of Smollett by Roscoe. The illustrations by George Cruikshank, much-reprinted over the following century, were made for this edition and make their first appearance here.
