An early version of Gray's novella, which lost the definitive article from its title upon publication, and was substantially re-edited textually. As well as a great many wording changes, chapter titles were changed and a preface was added, and the postscript entirely rewritten. It is also described (not inaccurately) on the front wrapper as 'a science fiction novella', a classification that was omitted from the published edition.
