FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [ii, ads], x, 536, 12 (ads) + frontispiece and 19 plates. Original dark purple cloth, rebacked, blocked in gilt to front board and spine. A little toning and spotting. Sometime neatly rebacked, preserving spine panel, extremities slightly rubbed. Ink ownership inscriptions to initial ad and following blank page.

Notes

The first edition of a collaboration between Dutch writer Herman Diederik John van Schevichaven (1826-1918) who published under the pseudonym Jacob Larwood, and English bibliophile and publisher John Camden Hotten (1832-1873). Hotten is best known for printing erotic and pornographic titles, as well as for founding the publishing company that would become Chatto & Windus after his death.
