Notes

A scarce undated bible produced by the Glasgow firm of Gowans and Gray, with a Mauchlineware binding depicting the Burns monument in Kilmarnock. The licence for printing the bible here reproduced to the verso of the title-page was awarded to their predecessor firm mentioned in the imprint and dated 1875. Gowans and Gray started issuing books under their joint imprint as here in 1879, which is also the date of construction of the monument depicted on the boards; Perhaps this book was produced to commemorate its opening.
Library Hub records only a single Gowans and Gray bible, at Oxford, dated 1896 with different pagination.
