Notes

The second edition of Hogg's collection of Jacobite songs, both music and lyrics, printed with his extensive notes, following their first printings in 1819 (the first volume) and 1821 (the second). The extent of Hogg's editorial reach has long been a contentious one - some songs are undoubtedly composed by him, some are unattributed here but by Robert Burns, and in his introduction Hogg thanks Walter Scott for 'innumerable' songs 'which he must have picked out of every cabinet and portfolio in the kingdom'. Regardless of its sources it stands as an important collection of material from a transitional period on Hogg's career as he moved away from the poetry that had made him famous towards the novels which sustain his fame today.
