Description

8vo, pp. [iv], xv, [i], 442, [2, ads]. Twentieth-century plain brown paper boards. First and last leaves toned from endpapers, some minor spotting elsewhere. Pencilled ownership inscription of W.L. Lorimer to flyleaf, earlier inscription of Cameron Grant of Forres to half-title.

Notes

The third edition of Boswell's 'teaser' for his magisterial Life of Johnson, a record of the pair's journey through the Highlands to the Hebrides and a companion to Johnson's own 'Journey to the Western Islands'. Among the notable contents are Johnson's sceptical remarks on the authenticity of the Ossian poems, then at the height of their popularity. This is from the original issue; it was reissed several years later with a map added.
