Notes

A biography of Glasgow-born missionary William Aitchison (1826-1859), who after studying at Yale was sent to Shanghai to proselytise in 1854. It was written by Charles Peck Bush (1813-1880), a Presbyterian minister from New York, and first published in Philadelphia in 1865 under the title 'Five Years in China; or, the Factory Boy made a Missionary. The Life and Observations of Rev. William Aitchison'. That American printing was also illustrated, but the plates in this Edinburgh edition are unique to this printing. Library Hub records six copies, at Oxford, Cambridge, NLS, SOAS, Birmingham and Trinity College, Dublin.
