FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY, 4to, pp. xi, [iii], 328 + 19 plates by Lizars, all printed on India paper and mounted. Contemporary half green roan, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands, lettered direct in gilt, marbled edges. Just a touch of spotting, some offsetting from plates. Somewhat rubbed, a little worn, bottom corner of front board defective. Small label to pastedown with purchase inscription: ‘Bt at Sotheby’s lot 202, sale of R. Watson’s books 16th Feb 1885’.

Notes

One of an unknown number of large-paper copies of this comprehensive account of the ruined abbeys of the Scottish borders, finely illustrated by Lizars, with the plates printed on India paper and mounted. Dibdin records the gift of one such copy from the publisher, calling it 'a work which does high honour to the author' (Tour in the Northern Counties, p. 1001).
