Notes

A scarce coastal pilot for eastern Scotland, compiled by Murdo Downie, 'Master in the Royal Navy, and Lately of His Majesty's Shop the Champion, on the Lieth [sic] Station' per the title-page. Downie, born in Aberdeen, was a North Sea fisherman before joining the navy, where he supplemented his income by producing charts of the coast. This volume states on the title-page 'Accompanied with Four Charts', but this is not strictly true: the four charts were published separately, in Aberdeen, and this text could be purchased to accompany them. It was useful on its own as well, providing considerable detail on the tides and features not provided on the charts, and is illustrated with a diagram of the style of compass Downie recommends. ESTC locates copies in five locations: Cambridge, BL, NLS, Norwich Central Library, and St Andrews.
