FIRST EDITION, folio, pp. xi, [iii], 718 + 10 plates. Later half calf, textured brown cloth boards, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, red morocco label, edges sprinkled red and blue. Some scattered water-staining to bottom quarter of textblock, else lightly toned. Sometime rebacked, preserving older backstrip, hinges relined, binding rubbed and worn, boards soiled. Scattered marginal notes in ink and pencil, some clipped by binder, small leaf of manuscript notes bound in, modern ownership inscription of John Hamilton to flyleaf.

Notes

The first edition of Douglas's magnum opus, several years in the planning, the 'most influential eighteenth-century account of the Scottish peerage' (ODNB). It was reissued in 1767 and was the foundation stone for everything that came after it, including Sir James Balfour Paul's vastly expanded nine-volume set 'Scots Peerage, Founded on Wood's Edition of Sir Robert Douglas's Peerage of Scotland' in the early twentieth century. This copy has been annotated in a close hand to the margins, with a further small leaf of notes listing 17th-century marriages bound in between pages 576 and 577.
