Notes

A scarce illustrated account of a highland Scottish nuptial tradition of the 'penny wedding,' in which attendees of the ceremony each contribute a penny which forms a fund for the newlyweds. From the look of the illustrations engraved by Joshua Gleadah they were a raucous affair with much drinking and merrymaking, culminating in a fight in the bedchamber as the revellers tussle for possession of the bride's stocking. The advert leaf to the rear indicates it was also available with the prints on india-paper and hand-coloured but both versions are now scarce, with Library Hub recording 4 copies, without differentiation, at NLS, BL, V&A and Oxford.
