Description

FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. [iv], 360. Later quarter red roan, textured purple cloth boards, spine lettered direct in gilt and tooled in gilt to ends, marbled edges. A little spotting, lightly soiled. Somewhat shaken, spine sunned, boards marked and a little soiled.

Notes

The first edition of Galt's Irvine-set novel. The Provost so impressed Coleridge that he wrote in his own copy 'this and The Entail would alone suffice to place Galt in the first rank of contemporary Novellists [sic] - and second only to Sir W. Scott in technique.'
