The third work of fiction by the naturalist best known for 'My Family and Other Animals' and his other autobiographical writings. Preceded by a young-adult novel (The Donkey Rustlers) and a work of comic fiction (Rosy is my Relative), this is his first work of outright fantasy: the plot concerns a group of children travelling to a mythological land to quell an uprising of cockatrices.
