Description

INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, pp. 108 + mounted frontispiece and 4 mounted plates. Original brown boards backed in brown cloth, boards blocked centrally in black, top edge brown. A little sunning to top of front board. Inscribed to the flyleaf: ‘For Mrs Butter, with love + kindest greetings from the author, Christmas 1941’.

Notes

A scarce, inscribed copy of a history of Captain James Macrae, known as 'the Fortunate Duellist' from his successful participation in a number of those affairs of single combat, on account of his quick temper. The 'Tragedy' of the title stemmed from another duel, against his erstwhile friend Sir George Ramsay, over an altercation Macrae had had with a young footman in Ramsay's employ. Macrae shot and killed Ramsay, and the scandal led to him fleeing to France, never to return.
Library Hub records just two copies, at NLS and BL.
