FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. viii, 312 + 6 black and white plates. Black and white illustrations to title-page and within pagination. Original blue cloth, boards blocked in pale blue, black, and blind, spine blocked in gilt, pictorial endpapers. A little foxing. Binding a little rubbed, spine ends bumped.


The scarce fifth book of William Henry Oliphant Smeaton (1856-1914), a Scottish writer and journalist who spent some years in New Zealand and Australia. Smeaton was known for his adventure stories earlier in his career and literary biographies later on. Library Hub and WorldCat cite only four copies in the UK, in the NLS, BL, Cambridge, and Oxford, with a further eight copies in Australian institutions.
