The ‘Life’ volume only, 8vo, pp. [vi], 194. The text enclosed within wood-engraved decorative borders and large initials printed in each of 5 different colours, frequent engraved head- and tail-pieces. Original green pebbled cloth, front board blocked in black and gilt, rear board in blind to a similar design, spine lettered in gilt. Slightly toned, a few minor spots, first gathering sprung. Spine a little darkened and rubbed at ends, a couple of marks to boards. Embossed stamps of W.H. Smith & Son Library and Unitarian College, bookplate of A.W. Fox.

The first edition of Milman's Life of Horace, rare in the publisher's binding, and normally found together with the poet's works - as per the general title-page here - though the volume curiously otherwise gives no numbering or other indication that this is a part of a larger work. Milman's Horace is notable for its colour decorations, designed by Owen Jones, and while the heights of his work are found in the section titles of the poems, the decorative elements here are still characteristically bold.
