12 vols., 8vo, pp. v, [i], 344 + frontispiece; iv, 438; [iv], 442; vi, 446; v, [i], 443, [1]; v, [i], 397, [1]; v, [i], 408; iv, 412; iv, [ii], 447, [1]; [iv], 402; [ii], iv, 389, [1]; [ii], iv, 455, [1]. Contemporary half russia, marbled boards, spines divided by wide raised bands, second and fourth compartments gilt-lettered direct, others with decorative four-part spray tools, marbled edges. Toned and spotted in places, some minor soiling. Extremities rubbed, a few spine ends chipped, vol. 5 front joint cracked and just holding, vol. 8 rebacked with new endpapers but preserving original backstrip. Ownership inscription of J. Thompson (1823) faintly present (sometimes partially erased) in each vol.

The frontispiece in vol. 1 is Freeman's engraving of Bartolozzi's portrait of Johnson. In this copy there appears to have been a composition error in the 'Advertisement' at the beginning of vol. 9: the text occupies two pages, but has been printed on the recto of one leaf and the verso of another (leaving a blank opening between them). This may have been intended to be cancelled - the same text is repeated in vol. 11 on a single leaf.
