The first edition of Woolf's book-length essay on war and women's work and education, the non-fiction portion of was was originally conceived as a 'novel-essay' - the fiction portion having been published as The Years the previous year. Only about half of the first impression was issued as such in this form; the remaining sheets were bound in green cloth as part of the Uniform Edition five years later.
