Notes

Hamburg's Odyssey Press issued Ulysses in several versions in December 1932, with a significant text revised by Stuart Gilbert at Joyce's own request: Slocum and Cahoon give apparent priority to the relatively common two-volume paperback edition of the same month, though it seems likely that it was issued simultaneously with this much scarcer india-paper single-volume edition, and both slightly before the special two-volume signed issue.
Since the Shakespeare and Company printings, the early American piracy, and the two-volume Odyssey Press edition were all in wrappers, this is therefore the first publication of the text in hardcover form, preceding the authorised American edition by more than a year.
