Notes

A handsome copy of the second edition of Emmeline Marjorie Lowe's (c.1835-1897) first travel book, initially published in 1857. The book charts her travel with her mother, Helen Emily Lowe (d.1882), through Scandinavia, with her most famous quote appearing in the first chapter: 'The only use of a gentleman in travelling is to look after the luggage, and we take care to have no luggage'. There is some ambiguity as to whether both women contributed to the accounts of their wanderings, with multiple records conflating their names, dates, and husbands. This mirrors the confusion from early reviewers of the books who assumed that 'Unprotected Females' implied multiple authors.
