Notes

The first edition of both parts of this Latin grammar by 'Scotland's foremost Latinist' (ODNB) Thomas Ruddiman, in unmatching but contemporary bindings. The parts being published six years apart, they are not often found together, matching or not. Ruddiman edited classical works for Edinburgh printer Robert Freebairn, and established his own press with brother Walter Ruddiman in 1712. This Latin grammar, 'a demanding work that was written entirely in Latin and aimed at only the most learned of classical scholars', (ODNB) nevertheless proved popular and was still being reprinted a century later.
