12mo, pp. xii, 142 + frontispiece. Contemporary calf, boards bordered with gilt rules and blind rolls, spine lettered vertically direct in gilt and tooled in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. A touch of offsetting to title-page from frontispiece. Sometime rebacked preserving most of earlier backstrip, hinges relined with blue cloth, old leather a little rubbed.

Notes

A scarce edition of the maxims of the 17th-century French nobleman and moralist, printed by radical English bookseller and publisher Effingham Wilson (1785-1868). Library Hub records just two copies: at BL and the V&A.
