Description

ONE OF 1,040 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER, 4to, pp. xvi, 183, [1] + frontispiece and 48 hand-coloured double-page plates. Original quarter green morocco, green pebbled cloth boards, spine lettered direct in gilt, top edge gilt, fore-edge untrimmed. Just a touch of toning. Binding worn a little to extremities, short tears to head and foot of spine.

Notes

Reminiscent in scope and style of his near-contemporary John Kay's 'Original Portraits', Crombie's engravings of the notables of Edinburgh society date from the last decade of his life and were collected by Kay's publisher Hugh Paton in 1851. A. and C. Black added copious biographical information on the sitters for this edition, reusing the original plates, which were then destroyed following this printing.
