12mo, pp. [iv], 176 + frontispiece. Later half black calf, marbled boards, spine divided by triple gilt rules and lettered in gilt direct, marbled edges. Strip trimmed from head of title-page, rear flyleaves excised, final leaf pierced and torn with no loss of sense. Binding a little rubbed. Ownership inscription of Mary Rochdale to flyleaf.

Notes

Seven of the tales in this popular children's improving anthology are by Mary Lamb, the remaining three by her brother Charles. It was first published in 1809, a project of the Lamb's regular collaborators Mary Jane Godwin and her husband William, father of Mary Shelley.
