Notes

The first edition under this title - a shorter version had appeared as 'A Tour in England and Scotland' two years earlier - of the most famous work by by William Thomson (1746-1817). Thomson often published under pseudonyms, and 'Thomas Newte' achieved such recognition that he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in his own right. 'Newte', supposedly from Devonshire, toured the Scotland that Thomson, actually born in Perthshire and educated at St Andrews and Edinburgh, would have known well.
