Description

3 vols, 8vo, pp. xxii, 323; [ii], 321, [69]; iv, [542]. Later black calf, boards bordered with double blind rules, red morocco label, top edges sprinkled red, others untrimmed. Some scattered spotting. A little rubbed and marked, a touch of wear to extremities. Armorial bookplates of James Rankin and binder’s tickets of James H. Jackson to pastedowns, ownership inscriptions of Rev. John Hunter, Crieff, to flyleaves.

Notes

A reprint for the Oxford University market of Friedrich Reiz's 1778 edition of Herodotus, completed after his death by Gottfried Heinrich Schäfer, along with a lexicon by Johann Schweighäuser which was originally published in two volumes, here reprinted with the text in double-columns. The three volumes have been long kept together and share Perthshire provenance: bookplates of James Rankin (1831-1902), minister of Muthill, and ownership signatures of Rev. John Hunter from the nearby parish of Crieff West. The three volumes were bound by Perth stationer and binder James H. Jackson, active around the end of the 19th century.
