Notes

The first English translation of these stories from the court of Phillip the Good in fifteenth century France, lauded as the first work of literary prose in French. With bawdy premises and titles like 'The Husband in the Clothes-Chest', 'Two Lovers for One Lady', and 'Cuckolded-- and Duped', the gathering of the original text has been attributed to Antoine de la Sale (c.1385-c.1461), though notes at the end of this edition elaborate on sources for some of the tales.
The publisher Charles Carrington (1867-1921), born Paul Harry Ferdinando, had a reputation for printing erotica and complained in his preface to a book he published in 1904 that 'the English book press... have never forgiven me for having issued complete English translations of Brantôme's Vies des Dames Galantes; Les Cents Nouvelles Nouvelles (Louis XI.); Barbey d'Audrévilly's Weird Women; and Dr. Cabanès' Le Cabinet Secret de l'Histoire'.
This edition is stated on the wrappers as 'Strictly Limited to 575 copies', with a note that only subscribers received the fifty-two hand-coloured plates by M. Léon Lebègue (1863-1930) present in this copy. A contemporary advertisement indicates that the plates were purchased in addition to the volumes, so there are several variations available on the market and noted institutionally. The 575 copies are divided between 500 copies on 'antique English rough-edged paper', as here, with 75 copies printed in a single volume on India paper.
An online bibliography of erotica suggests that a similar two volume edition of 1,250 copies is a pirated printing produced decades after the first, with only black and white illustrations. The title-page of the reprint is identical to this first but is printed only in black, with the phrasing of the limitation stating it is printed not by but 'from' the Charles Carrington 1899 edition.
This copy was handsomely rebound in the twentieth century, preserving the original pale pink wrappers, which rarely survive.
