Description

2 vols., 8vo, pp. xv, [i], 447, [17]; [ii], 430, [18] + 3 folding maps. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines gilt in compartments, red morocco labels, edges sprinkled red. A little light spotting and soiling, title-pages somewhat rumpled from bookplates on verso. Joints and spine ends worn and sometime rather heavily furbished, with resulting darkening to leather. Armorial bookplates of Sir Edward Littleton, Bart, to verso of title-pages.

Notes

The 'third' - in fact the fourth, following the 1709 first, 1720 second, and 1723 first third - edition of the first complete translation of Herodotus into English. The only previous English version was a 1584 translation from French, rather than the Greek original, and comprised only the first two books. The translator of this one, Isaac Littlebury (d. 1710) is said to have been the son of the bookseller Thomas Littlebury, both men being known for their skill with languages. Scarce in any early edition.
